Mitt Romney: A Political Biography
Early Life and Education
Willard Mitt Romney was born on March 12, 1947, in Detroit, Michigan. He is the son of George W. Romney, a former governor of Michigan, and Lenore Romney. Romney attended Cranbrook School and graduated from Brigham Young University in 1971. He later earned an MBA from Harvard Business School in 1975.
Business Career
After graduating from Harvard, Romney worked as a management consultant at Bain & Company. In 1984, he co-founded Bain Capital, a private equity firm. Romney was the CEO of Bain Capital from 1984 to 1999. During this time, he led the firm to become one of the most successful private equity firms in the world.
Political Career
In 1994, Romney ran for the U.S. Senate from Massachusetts. He defeated incumbent Ted Kennedy in the Republican primary, but lost to Kennedy in the general election. In 2002, Romney was elected governor of Massachusetts. He served as governor until 2007. In 2008, Romney ran for president of the United States. He won the Republican nomination, but lost to Barack Obama in the general election. In 2012, Romney ran for president again. He won the Republican nomination again, but lost to Obama in the general election. In 2018, Romney was elected to the U.S. Senate from Utah. He serves on the Foreign Relations Committee.
Personal Life
Romney is married to Ann Romney. They have five children. Romney is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
